By Design, Not Default: Why I Created This Coaching Program

July 25, 20269 min read

If you've been growing a career in finance, chances are you've worked incredibly hard to get where you are today. You have put in long hours, accepted more responsibility, solved difficult problems, and become someone people rely on.

You might now be looking around and realizing something unexpected.

Your career is thriving, but the rest of your life feels like it's been on hold.

Work follows you everywhere. Your mind never fully switches off. You carry responsibilities that don't all belong to you. You assume you should already know the answers so you push through in silence instead of asking for help.

Somewhere along the way, work stopped being part of your life and became the center of it.

If any of that sounds familiar, I want you to know something:

It doesn't have to stay that way.

This is the story behind why I created By Design, Not Default, my one-on-one coaching program for finance professionals who want to be successful at work without sacrificing themselves or the rest of the lives they want to create.

In this blog post, I'll cover:

I Didn't Create This Program Because I Think You Should Care Less About Your Career

I created it because my own experience taught me something: career success shouldn't have to come at the expense of the rest of your life.

Like many finance professionals, I took pride in my work. I enjoyed solving complex problems, contributing to my team, and taking on bigger challenges. My career mattered to me.

But over time, I noticed something.

Without ever making a conscious decision, work had started making decisions for me.

It dictated my schedule, my energy, my attention, and even how present I could be with the people and experiences that mattered most.

I was physically present, but often mentally still at work. Evenings became an extension of the workday. Weekends often became time to catch up or get ahead. It wasn't because anyone expected me to work all the time. It happened gradually, through hundreds of small decisions that felt reasonable in the moment. Until one day I realized work had become the center of my life.

The solution wasn't to become less ambitious.

The solution wasn't to lower my standards.

The solution wasn't even to care less about work.

Instead, I realized something that completely changed how I thought about success:

You don't need a less demanding career. You need a more compelling vision of your life outside of work.

Once I had something outside of work worth protecting, I started making different decisions at work.

That didn't mean caring less about my career. It meant deciding there were relationships, experiences, hobbies, and personal goals that deserved the same intentionality I had always given my work.

Protecting time for those things stopped feeling selfish. It became essential.

And perhaps most surprisingly, my performance at work didn’t suffer. I became more intentional about where my time and energy created the greatest value and focused there.

Over the years, I've realized this wasn't unique to me. Many of the finance professionals I now coach aren't looking for a less demanding career… they're looking for a way to succeed without feeling like work has to consume the rest of their life.

Why I Believe Traditional Leadership Development Isn't Enough

As I continued coaching and working with finance professionals, I noticed a pattern.

Most leadership development focuses on becoming better at work.

  • Improving a leadership competency.

  • Strengthening a weakness.

  • Taking on more responsibility.

  • Becoming a stronger leader.

While those things certainly have value, they often don't contemplate this question:

What is all of it for?

That's where my approach to coaching finance professionals differs.

In my experience, traditional leadership coaching often helps people become more effective inside the way they're already working. But if the way you're working isn't sustainable, becoming more effective at it doesn't solve the underlying problem.

My clients weren't struggling because they lacked capability.

In fact, their capability was often the very reason they kept being given more.

They were already high performers.

What they were struggling with were the assumptions shaping how they approached work every day.

Shouldn't they be able to handle everything themselves?

Shouldn't they already know the answer?

Shouldn't they take the work on if asked?

Isn't this just the way it is?

Those assumptions influenced their decisions every day. They carried more than they needed to. Work expanded to fill most of the available time. They struggled to create boundaries that felt sustainable—not because they lacked discipline, but because they'd never stopped to question the way they were working.

Most importantly, they had never intentionally decided how they wanted their careers to support their life outside of work.

That's when another realization became crystal clear.

You can't redesign how you work until you first decide what you want to make room for.

Leadership Is About More Than Performance at Work

My coaching philosophy is different because I don't believe leadership exists only inside the office.

Yes, I want my clients to perform well at work.

Yes, I want them to create value.

But I don't believe success should require constant sacrifice.

Instead of helping people become endlessly better at work, I help them become more intentional about how they work.

Not by lowering expectations.

Not by doing less.

But by making sure their effort creates meaningful value instead of simply consuming more time and energy.

Every client arrives with different circumstances, but the coaching follows the same philosophy.

First, we create clarity about the life they want their career to support.

Then we uncover the beliefs, assumptions, and habits that are shaping how they experience work today—often without realizing it.

Finally, we redesign the practical ways they work: how they prioritize, make decisions, communicate expectations, lead themselves, work with their teams, and navigate stakeholders, so their daily actions support the life they're trying to build.

Over time, those ideas evolved into what I now call the By Design, Not Default Framework: a practical approach to helping finance professionals intentionally redesign how they work so it works for both their career success and the life they want to create.

Because sustainable success doesn't come from one productivity hack.

It comes from designing an entire way of working that supports the life you want to live.

In short:

Work is an important part of life, not the whole of it. Leadership isn't just about getting better results at work; it's about designing a way of working that allows you to succeed professionally while being fully present for the life you're building outside of it.

Why This Matters More Than Ever

The pace of corporate life isn't slowing down.

If anything, it's becoming more demanding.

Technology continues to accelerate change.

Economic uncertainty creates constant pressure.

Organizations expect more agility, more collaboration, and faster results. Usually with fewer people.

The demands aren't going away.

Meanwhile, none of us are formally taught how to navigate the growing demands of work and life.

And you might assume things will get easier once you reach the next leadership level.

After more than two decades in finance, I've found the opposite is often true. Promotions usually reward capable people with even more responsibility. Unless you intentionally redesign how you work, success can gradually become the very thing that leaves you with the least time and energy to enjoy it.

Without intentionally deciding how you want work to fit into your life, each promotion can just increase the demands on your time, energy, and attention.

Eventually, many talented professionals begin asking themselves difficult questions:

  • "Can I actually keep doing this?"

  • "Do I have to leave finance to have a life?"

  • "Is it really possible to have career success without sacrificing myself?"

I believe the answer is yes.

But not by default.

Only by design.

The Results Go Far Beyond Work

One of my favorite pieces of feedback from clients is that our coaching doesn't just improve their work. Even though that's usually why they came to coaching.

It improves how they approach the rest of their lives.

Clients often tell me they feel more in control of their work instead of constantly reacting to it. They stop carrying responsibilities that were never really theirs. They become clearer about what deserves their attention and what doesn't. They're more present at home because work no longer follows them everywhere. And perhaps most importantly, they begin experiencing success in a way that actually feels sustainable.

As clients gain clarity about what matters most and begin changing both their thinking and their work habits, they experience meaningful results… not only at work, but in their relationships, confidence, and ability to be present outside of work.

That's always been the goal.

Because success shouldn't end when you close your laptop.

My Vision for the Future

My hope is that one day finance professionals stop believing that overworking, sacrificing the rest of their lives and living on the brink of burnout is the price of ambition.

I want ambitious professionals to know they don't have to shrink their goals.

They simply need to become intentional about what those goals are meant to support.

Because your career should be one important part of a rich life, not the thing that consumes it.
